The Department of Dental and Facio-maxillary Surgical Oncology at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital was established in 2008, initially offering outpatient services. In 2009, indoor facilities were introduced with two dedicated beds, allowing us to commence major oral cancer surgeries under general anesthesia.

Our inpatient services have since expanded to include four non-paying beds, with additional paying beds and private cabins available as needed. On average, our department admits 8-10 patients. We conduct major operations two days a week. Our department caters to patients referred from various institutions across the country for diagnosis, definitive surgical procedures, and adjuvant therapy.

Activities:

  1. Major Surgery under General Anesthesia: This includes oral cancer surgery and reconstruction using pedicle flaps (e.g., Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap, Deltopectoralis, Nasolabial, Tongue, Forehead, Abbe-Estlander) and microvascular flaps (e.g., Radial Free Forearm Flap, Fibula Free Flap).

  2. Minor Surgery under Local Anesthesia: This covers procedures such as incisional and excisional biopsy, wound dressing, secondary sutures, and extractions.

  3. Patient Presentation in Departmental Tumor Board: Discussing patient cases within the department's specialized tumor board.

  4. Patient Presentation in Central Tumor Board: Presenting patient cases to the institute's central tumor board for broader consultation.

  5. Patient Care for Referrals: Providing care for patients referred from other departments within our institute.

  6. Ongoing Research: Conducting research work within our department.
